Christmas Stockings for Soldiers Serving in Iraq (Heather - Acworth, GA)
In honor of my brother and the other soldiers in his unit currently deployed, my mother and I got together with our friends and made almost 400 stockings to fill and send over for Christmas. A group of ladies got together and in one evening made 400 tags to attach to the stockings. Friends of the family donated candy, slim jims, toiletries, granola bars, games, books, cards, etc to fill the stockings. Last weekend, we took a day and formed an assembly line to fill and wrap each stocking, pack them boxes for shipping, and to pray for the soldiers who will spend these upcoming holidays apart from their families. Additional friends have even come forward and asked to help fund the shipping! It was overwhelming to see the generous response to our project and as a result, my brother's entire unit and an additional 150 troops will receive a stocking filled with love and prayers for the safe return of the soldier who receives it. It is incredible what a group of people can do with just a little time and effort. What a way to begin the holidays!
Christmas Ornaments to Remember to Gifts (Connie - Surprise, AZ)
For the last 15 years or so, I've carried through on 2 traditional "givings". 1) In the names of my children, their cousins and some close family friends' children, I have given a donation to Heifer Project International. Each year I buy farm animal ornaments (cows, sheep, chickens, any animal that HI represents, 1 for each child. The donation for a share in the specific animal is made in the child's name. I write the year and "Heifer Project" on the ornament and give it, along with information on the donation (nicely downloadable from Heifer's website), to the children. This way, for many years to come, they will have a commemoration of the gift given in their name. 2)Instead of giving wine or other expensive and sometimes meaningless gifts to co-workers in my husband's office, we give a donation in honor of each individual to Habitat for Humanity. We happen to give to our local Habitat organization. To commemorate the donation, I find "house-type" ornaments (often birdhouses), write the year and "Habitat for Humanity" on the gift and then wrap and give these to everyone. It is always appreciated by the recipient!
